It’s easier than you think.

Jo here, a human coach for college students and grads at uNeed A Coach.

I just read an article in The New York Times talking about how recruiters are drowning in AI resumes, with some job postings getting 1,000+ applications in the first few days. As a result, they are overwhelmed and struggling to tell who’s genuinely qualified or even genuinely interested.

Consider this your OPPORTUNITY!

They are craving evidence that you are HUMAN.

Here's a little story... Here at uNeed A Coach we recently received a job application that had a spelling mistake. In the old days, this would have possibly looked bad—but we found ourselves delighted!

Why?

It told us this person wrote it themselves. Our delight honestly surprised us (and I don't advocate including a spelling mistake as a strategy. Proofreading is still important!) But it showed us firsthand the impact AI is having in job applications.

Here’s the tricky part:

AI résumé screening tools often favor keyword-stuffed résumés, so a genuinely written résumé might initially rank lower if it doesn’t include all the right phrases.

But that doesn’t mean authenticity loses—you just need to combine clarity, thoughtful keywords, and your human story.

So how do you stand out?

*** By being genuine***

HERE ARE YOUR TIPS

1. Tell a real story.

Stories cut through the noise. Recruiters are reading hundreds of résumés that all sound the same, packed with buzzwords. When you tell a specific moment—maybe how you solved a problem on a team, or how you learned from a failure—it signals to the recruiter that there’s a real human behind the words. A short, authentic story makes them pause and see you.

2. Share your “why.”

AI can fake enthusiasm, but it usually sounds generic. When you write why you care about this role or this company, it shows effort, curiosity, and connection. Recruiters are tired of copy-paste applications—they want to feel you’ve chosen them intentionally, not just blasted your résumé everywhere. That spark of alignment is memorable.

3. Own your growth.

Most AI résumés are over-polished, claiming “expertise” in everything. When you acknowledge where you’re still growing—paired with the skills you already bring—it’s disarmingly honest. Recruiters appreciate humility and coachability. It tells them you’re self-aware, ready to learn, and not trying to “game” the system.

4. Use your voice.

Corporate jargon is where AI thrives. But recruiters notice when your words sound conversational, clear, and yours. You don’t have to be overly casual—just natural. For example, instead of “leveraged cross-functional synergies,” you could say “worked with three departments to improve communication.” It’s refreshing, and it makes your application easier (and more enjoyable) to read.

5. Show up—real.

This is where your hidden “soft skills” shine through the process itself. Every interaction sends a signal:

  • Timeliness → Applying early shows initiative. Recruiters see who’s engaged from the start.

  • Proofreading → A clean, well-formatted résumé shows care and respect.

  • Following instructions → Submitting the requested sample or essay—completely—signals reliability.

  • Tone → A warm, professional cover letter or email feels human, not templated.

  • Consistency → When your résumé, LinkedIn, and application all match, it builds trust.

Each of these steps quietly reassures a recruiter: This person is responsible, thoughtful, and real.

6. Be strategic with keywords.

AI screeners are still gatekeepers. Use the job description to guide you—but weave the terms naturally into your résumé. This keeps you visible to the system and authentic to the human who reads it next. Recruiters can tell when keywords are jammed in unnaturally; balance is the key.

The bottom line:

AI can help sort résumés, but it can’t make you real. Your story, your motivation, and your authenticity are what will ultimately get you in front of humans.

👉 Here's a simple way to remember it:

1. Tell your story.

2. Share your why.

3. Show up real.
